Golden Rule

Interest Improvement

article
I've been asked, "What's the most important quality for a good salesperson to have?"

You might get a 100 different answers if you asked 100 different people, but I believe there's only one quality more important than all others for the success of a salesperson.

I believe a salesperson should, above all other things, be interesting.

Salespeople are in the business of creating interest. Their primary purpose is capturing attention, molding it, and projecting that interest towards the purchase of their product or service.

"I don't know where I'm going from here, but I promise it won't be boring." - David Bowie

If a salesperson can't be interesting, they can't make sales.

Likewise, the more interesting a salesperson can be, the more sales they can make. If this is true, if you agree with me, wouldn't it make sense for a salesperson to constantly work to improve their ability to be interesting?

Above all other things, figure out how to be more interesting.

There's always room for "interest improvement."

Some salespeople are extremely interesting to themselves and their small group of friends. That's not enough. Eventually, you'll run out of people to sell who are like you and your friends. The real challenge for a salesperson is to be interesting to people who are NOT like them, prospects they may not even like right now.

The less people you're interesting to, the less people you can interest in what you're selling.

I'll end with this quote from a lady most of the world found extremely interesting...

"Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it's better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring." - Marilyn Monroe
