You Can't Afford It

 

It's late and I'm just going to type, okay?

 

One of the problems people have in achieving great success is they want to do it on the cheap. Seriously, they want great big piles of grand achievement to be bought & paid for with little, tiny piles of commitment. 

 

 

When I married my wife, Shelly, I had no idea how much marriage was going to totally change my life. I had no idea how much it would really cost to have children. I didn't have a clue how expensive making a life would be for me and my family.

 

What I did know is this...whatever the cost, I was willing to pay the price.

 

I sold out to the idea long before I fully understood the cost. I didn't just have skin in the game; I put my whole life in the game. Everything. All of it. Every last dollar.

 

The rewards have exceeded my wildest expectations!

 

 

Okay, back to reality here...

 

You don't want to risk much to get everything you want in return. I totally understand.

 

Unfortunately, that's not how life works. In reality, you get what you give.

 

If you want the chance to get a lot, you have to first give a lot. If you're okay with a getting little, put up a few bucks, invest a little of your time, and you'll get about as much back--maybe a little more--in return. 

 

However, if you want the dream, it's going to cost you everything. They don't just give dreams away. They're expensive. That's why they call them dreams...dream home, dream vacation, dream marriage, etc., etc., etc.

 

 

Anything worth having is expensive.

 

You can't have it until you can pay for it.

 

Sure, you pay in dollars, but you also pay for what you want with much more than dollars.

 

You pay for it in time. You pay in education. You pay in experience. You pay by giving up what you want less to get what you want more. Often you pay more than what you thought it would cost. 

 

You can't have what the people around you have because you can't afford to pay what they had to pay to get what they got. You can't afford it because you aren't willing to pay for it.

 

How much does it cost?

 

Everything!

 

 

Now, if you're wanting to achieve something easy, that's easy. However, it won't be worth much because it won't cost you much.

 

How do you know it's cheap?

 

That's easy: You won't have any skin in the game.

 

People used to say, "Put your money where your mouth is," but I like to re-phrase that saying like this: "Put your money where your heart is."

 

Figure out what you want, what you really want, and give it everything you've got. 

 

Sell out entirely. Push all your chips in and play to win. Give it all you've got. 

 

If this is what you really want from your life, put your money where your heart is and take the ride.

 

Otherwise, you'll continue to get what you've been getting. It won't get better; it will only get worse. You'll give less and get less until you quit giving at all--which, interestingly, is also about the same time you stop getting.
